Day 21
Monday, back to school I go. This morning I have another Latin class. We are still doing Mexican cuisine but I am just exhausted. I ended up staying up to late and my feet are hurting from walking all over Rome. Oh well, it was worth it. The menu was decent today but not awesome. At least we got guacamole and one of us going to do a spicy salsa so of course we will be making some homemade tortilla chips. Then we have stuffed chiles, of course pablanos are pretty much impossible to get here so we have to use green peppers. Then we basically have just started calling Italian Parsley "Cilantro" because its all we have to substitute. We do the best we can. The thing we were looking forward to the most was the addition of caesar salad to the menu. We have a great group for Latin class. We all work together and a small menu like this is no problem for us. I worked on a lot of little things just helping prep and make some sauces to help out other groups. It was easy enough for us to put out a great menu with enough food for everyone that came with us and then some. Of course we have to actually get people to show up for lunch first. We always have too much leftovers but we can usually convince the full time interns to take it home or save it for lunch. Latin food is a welcome substitute to the Americans that have already been here for months. The food around here is great of course, but you just don't have a lot of options in this small town. You can go to a nicer restaurant like the Zeppelin or you can go to one of the 50 pizzarias around town. Then there are the random restaurants that are pretty much the version of fast food around here. They are always middle eastern cuisine restaurants that also happen to serve "hamburgers." The only good thing they have their is the "kebabs" which are a odd version of a Greek gyro, but they put some weird stuff on it like french fries and too much red cabbage. However some of the people with us have become obsessed with it so I question sometimes why they came. Anyways, lunch was great, we cleaned up and I just went home today. I wasn't on the schedule to intern today so I just took the time to get ahead on some homework. I did book some flights to England and Ireland though that I'll be going to in a few weeks. It will be a long 4.5 day weekend for us so it will be a nice break.
